MOTHER SCHMUCKERS

comedy / Belgium / 2021 / 1h10m

Obscenely dumb and even dumber!

Issachar and Zabulon are dumber than a rock. The two teenagers have no job, no ambitions, and no life purpose. Their IQ is roughly around room temperature (Celsius), and even that is a generous estimation. The brothers are immature, flippant, reckless, and completely out of touch with reality. We’re not quite sure how they managed to survive up to this point since something called “the self-preservation instinct” is a term unknown to them (so is algebra, logical reasoning, calculus…). There is simply no way that you won’t like them! Their life is never boring and always full of adventures. We meet the brothers when they’re cooking burgers of (definitely) organic origin (we’re sure that the patties were food at one point in time, probably before being digested). Yet, that is not the weirdest thing they’ll do in the next few hours. Issachar and Zabulon are always quick to make their mother’s blood boil, but this time they are really in for it! While goofing around in the city, they lose their mother’s beloved dog. She tells the brothers that if they don’t find it they’ll be living on the streets. Miraculously, there seems to be a spark of understanding in their usually vacant expressions. The two idiots go on a rescue mission but, obviously, not without getting themselves into the most absurd situations.

“Mother Schmuckers” is a comedy that is crazy, obscene, and very zingy. If you are a true aficionado of the ridiculous and the absurd (and you leave decorum outside the door) this is a film for you! Harpo Guit and Lenny Guit are a young and charmingly incorrigible duo of directors. They create an experimental film that mixes together slapstick humor, funny characters, exaggerated reality, and loads of things that we definitely wouldn’t like to see on screen – but since they are already there, why not? The only thing is, we don’t know whether to laugh or be in total disbelief! Remember, what has been seen cannot be un-seen! This Belgian production is a tribute to the classics of the absurd genre. It offers humor that is both weird and pleasant, is a play on the traditional film form, crosses boundaries of good taste, and has a twisted plot. And we really mean twisted: as soon as you’re convinced nothing weirder can happen, suddenly, as if it can sense your apprehension, the film says, with a vacant expression akin to Zabulon’s: Bet?

Splat! Suggests: Caution! This hilarious comedy crosses a lot of boundaries! The humor is so extreme that it can drive a wedge between you and your best friends!
