An impressive debut by a British director Michael Pearce who tells a story of a dark side of human nature. Moll (an outstanding Jessie Buckley) is a black sheep of the wealthy and dignified English family. An unfortunate event from the past that a girl took part in, made her mother decide to homeschool the daughter and control every step she takes. Heroine escapes her own elegant birthday party, organised in the garden. Then, at night, during crazy dances and drinking alcohol Moll meets a mysterious huntsman, Pascal. She decides very quickly to move in to his house. However, when some teenager goes missing in suspicious circumstances and series of murders occur in the area, Moll has to make a choice. Whether she wants to stay in the familiar, orderly reality, or step in to the dangerous and unpredictable world of wild instincts and lust.
Pearce constructs a thick atmosphere of atypical, beautifully shot thriller. He captures not only the island’s landscape, where the action takes place, but also, most of all, the ambivalence and inscrutability of central characters’ motifs. [Netia Off Camera]
